What has Kai been doing?

Well, that’s not a bad question. Clearly, with our last post dating back to November 2024, we’ve not been blogging. So what have we all been up to these past few months?

A fair bit!...Anyone following our socials may be aware of a small documentary called Fighting for the Underdog. Since its amazing launch in Bristol last October, Liberty and team have been making sure the unassuming Spurdog is treated like a true celebrity. After tremendous feedback at the launch, we took the documentary to Plymouth, Oban, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Oxford, Cornwall with many more places to come. If you’re based in Hampshire, Aberystwyth or Norwich keep your eyes peeled.

Perhaps most importantly, we partnered with London Business School in a screening and panel discussion about the role of business in driving sustainable practices. Excitingly, not only did the screening attract great interest but it also set the scene for a longer term, deeper partnership between LBS and Kai. There will be more on this front soon, so watch this space!

It is our aim to ensure as many people as possible access and view Fighting for the Underdog, and so getting it on a streaming platform is pretty important to us. We’ll just attempt to contain our excitement until we can tell you who we’re partnering with to make it happen!

However, it’s not only the public stuff that matters, it’s also what goes on quietly behind the scenes. Perhaps the most important of these developments was the formation of One Kai as a registered charity with the Charity Commission of England and Wales. We rely on grants and donations to carry out our work - recognising that there are many scam artists out there, it is great to be able to tell people that we are a well run, regulated charity. Hopefully this will allow people to donate safely in the knowledge that their donations will be used properly.

This also meant that we were able to extend our visibility through joining 1% for the Planet, an amazing organisation helping companies team up with charities to help push efforts towards a more sustainable planet. We will always be grateful to our partner, Ethica Diamonds for having proposed us - thank you so much!

Another group of people we owe a debt of gratitude to is the team at The Non Profit Design Studio, an amazing CIC focused on designing amazing websites for non profit organisations. You might have noticed our online presence looks a little different, with our previous website now replaced by this killer new version. Well this is all thanks to the efforts of a talented, generous team who built this for us for 0 squids. Thank you so much to a group of people who have made raising Ocean awareness that little bit easier for us.

We can’t just look backwards though. With the charity established, a sexy new website in place, a film and podcast series in the bag, we need to cast our eyes forwards. Developing technology to support Ocean conservation efforts is something that is core to our mission too. The relationships and deep trust we’ve developed with different people whilst filming Fighting for the Underdog mean we can do something quite special in this area. More on this later, but I can truly say we’re excited to see what the rest of 2025 will bring.

Like running a marathon, it doesn’t really matter if you gallop along or crawl on all fours. So long as you’re moving forward, you’re making progress. We’re incredibly proud of the gallopy stuff we managed to achieve so far. However, we’re also just as pleased to see quiet but important progress happening across all areas. We’re still at the start of our journey but are excited to see that every day, week, every month,we find ourselves moving forward.
